Healing Recipe for Medication Side Effect #1: including loosing smell

I did not take medication for a long time, but my tooth broke due to three consecutive nightmares that I had in January (I had a serious car accident in 2001 and I have had PTSD, but I did not have a nightmare for a while).

The dental local anesthesia gave me a side effect. I did not want to take  pain medication from the doctor, but I had too much pain so I took one tablet of pain medication which gave me serious side effect and I could not move much for three days. It was so scared.

It has been three week, I lost my taste buds and smell and  have a low fever everyday. Feeling very tired and weak.  In five elements that taste is associated Soil energy and smell with Fire energy I have been making healing remedy drinks and healing foods to resonate with those stage of transformation or the preceding stages that nourish them.

There are many remedy drinks and healing food I could make for myself.
I hope my experience helps others so I would share recipe one by one.

Healing Recipe for medication side effect #1 including loosing smell:

Leafy Green Remedy Drink for Fire Energy.

1. Very finely chop two or three kinds of large, leafy green vegetables. (I used collards, dandelion, and daikon leaves).

2. Add twice the amount of cold water.

3. Bring to a gentle boil and simmer with 2” kombu sea vegetable for 5 minutes
4. Strain out the solid vegetables and add a pinch of sea salt or a few drops of shoyu/soy sauce/tamari toward the end of simmering and stir instead of kombu.
5. Drink hot or at room temperature.

This remedy drink also help to detox your liver that toxic from medication and liver disorder from yang condition from eating excessive chips, bread and too much eggs and dissolve heavy, stagnated protein, animal fat, and cholesterol deposits.

My sense of smell has coming back slowly, but surely.

-->

At Macrobiotic Healing for Women's class

It was one of my dreams to teach for healing class for women for a long time and this year I was able to start it at Seed Kitchen this year almost every month.
It has been a really great opportunity to practice and teaching this class.
The last month I was planing to teach class for Thyroid problems and many people who could not come to the class have requested me to post this on my blog so here is one for everyone. I hope this help many people and I hope to practice and teach my macrobiotics many more years.

These are the things I shared in the class:

When I read an article that it's estimated that as many as 59 million Americans have a thyroid problem. I questioned myself “Do most of us know about it?”. I had time to time people who have had a thyroid cancer and a problem came for macrobiotic counseling to me. The macrobiotic approach of diet and life style definitely helped and healed them when they followed directions. I, myself had to followed the direction to help heal my two dogs who had thyroid problems.
Some of you might wonder that a dog and a human have the same problems and results? Yes, I have seen so many symptoms with human also over dogs. I have researched more when I needed to help my two dogs from their thyroid problems and applied to them and sure worked so much and they are both doing good. They are not taking any western meditation anymore. You can also get benefit from macrobiotic approach for thyroid problems.

The first, you need to know your thyroid grand. It is an important organ just like heart and stomach and others, but the majority of us don't know it yet. It is a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck a small gland found at the base of your neck just above your collarbone, just below your Adam's apple. I think it should move like butterfly and be flexible so the thyroid hormones control your body activities and metablism like your body temperature and how fast you burn calories and how fast your heart beats.

1. The example signs of Thyroid problems
Since undiagnosed thyroid problems can dramatically increase your risk of obesity, heart disease, depression, anxiety, hair loss, sexual dysfunction, infertility and a host of other symptoms and health problems, it's important that you don't go undiagnosed.
You don't need to have all of these symptoms in order to have a thyroid problem, but here are some of the most common signs that you may have a thyroid condition:

1) Fatigue.
2) Weight Changes.
3) Depression and Anxiety.
4) Cholesterol Issues
5) Bowel Problems.
6) Menstrual Irregularities and Fertility Problems.
7) Hair/Skin Changes.
8) Neck Discomfort/Enlargement.
9) Muscle and Joint Pains, Carpal Tunnel/Tendonitis Problems

3. Two major problems of Thyroid:

4 Macrobiotic Medicinal Remedy Drink for Thyroid:
The modern diet of meat and other processed foods can cause the thyroid to malfunction.
Modern diets low in iodine and other trace of minerals found in whole grains, vegetables from land and sea, and other fresh foods are primary cause. Doctors can give a western medication but it doesn’t address the source of the problem.

This drink is can help to detox your body’s condition and support for hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism both.

1/4 cup each vegetables of carrot, burdock, daikon, lotus root
1 cup daikon greens or other hard leafy greens
1/4 cup komubu, soaked chopped small
4 cups water

1. Finely chop all the vegetables and soaked kombu.
2. Put all the ingredients and add water to bring a boil in a covered pot.
3. Lower the flame, and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
4. Add a pinch of sea salt or 3~4 drops of tamari or ¼ umeboshi plum at the end of cooking.
5. Drink and eat 1 cup while it is warm/hot.
6. You can drink and eat everyday, 1 cup, for 10~14 days. Then every other day for an equal period.

If you have concern it is important to have a macrobiotic counseling for more advise.

5. Macrobiotic food and life style recommendations for Thyroid problems

1) Example of what to eat more
·  Vitamin A rich foods (carrot. butternut squash, dark leafy greens, sweet potato, dried apricots etc.)
·  Omega-3 Fats (sea vegetables, fax Seeds, chia Seeds, hemp seeds, mung beans, winter squash, leafy greens, berries, etc.)
·  Miso/ Miso soup *
·  Soy sauce/ Natto fermented soy beans products *
·  Umeboshi plums *
·  Sea vegetables/Iodine* (including kombu, kelp, dulse, nori, wakame, arame etc.)
The best to getting from the sea vegetables directly, but if you are not used them you can take
sea vegetables/seaweed tablet as a supplement till you get used to eat them.
*too much iodine can actually trigger thyroid problems and worsen symptoms, so it’s
important to have a healthy balance.
·  Saltwater fish (2~4 oz 1~3 weeks only with grated daikon and lemon juice if you want to eat fish)

*** To find good recipes for Miso, Natto fermented soy beans and umeboshi plums you can check vegan macrobiotic healing cookbook "Love, Sanae"

2) Example of what to avoid:

·  Any meat and dairy food.
·  Refined processed food.
·  Cauliflower (Any vegetable that falls into the broccoli family is a goitrogen and shouldn’t be eaten more than twice a week if you have hypothyroidism and raw if you have hyperthyroid.)
·  Millet
·  Pine nuts/Peanuts
·  Unfermented soy
·  Canola oil
·  Iodized salt  (iodized salt is heavily processed so recommend avoiding)

3) Example of Life style:
1)     Make your medicinal drink yourself and cook your healing food at home.
2)     Go to bed early and rise early.
3)     Be active mentally and physically.
4)     Everyday do light exercise or take a walk outside for a half hour.
5)     Massage yourself thyroid ground area to stimulate for 5 minutes every day and also receive Shiatsu massage.

7)     Avoid artificial environments, including exposure to high-voltage lines, excess air- conditioning, stagnate sir, dampness or high humidity and chemicals (including cosmetics and other body products). No fluoresces light. No X-ray (including at the airport also)
8)     Keep your living area clean and in good order.
9)     Avoid stressful human relations.
10)   Try to keep in touch with nature and live simply.
11)   Use organic cotton for underwear. Bed sheets, pillowcases, and comforter cover.
12)   Try to avoid using TV, computers, microwaves, fluorescent lamps, and other devise and equipment that emit strong electromagnetic filed.
13)   Tell yourself you are better and no more thyroid problem and sign happy song everyday.

Be healthy and be happy!

Love, Sanae

Macrobiotic Women's Health and the Thyroid

The macrobiotic way of healing thyroid problems and strengthening the thyroid was the subject at Studio Mugen’s Macrobiotic Healing for Women class on Sunday at Seed Kitchen in Venice, CA.

During the class Sanae Suzuki said the thyroid’s shape looks like a butterfly.  Just as butterflies move easily the thyroid needs to be relaxed and to move easily.  However, the modern diet of meat and other foods can cause the thyroid to malfunction.  Doctors can give a pill but it doesn’t address the source of the problem.

Sanae demonstrated how to make a medicinal remedy drink out of carrot, burdock, daikon and lotus root.  The drink should be taken every day for two weeks and then every other day for two weeks.  The remedy drink will help the thyroid detox and to work properly.

About 59 million people have thyroid problems in the United States.  A malfunctioning thyroid can cause such problems as depression, low body temperatures, low blood pressure, memory loss, swelling, tingly hands/feet, constantly tired, high cholesterol, menstrual problems, and muscle and joint pain.

In addition to the medicinal remedy drink, other actions a person can take to restore the thyroid is to stop eating baked goods with flour, eat more vegetables, eat pickled foods, sea vegetables and to not use canola cooking oil, no peanuts are oil food, nothing from the cauliflower family, no tropical fruits, no coffee, no millet or nightshade vegetables.

Sanae also talked about the new moon on December 2 and writing goals for one’s life.  The new moon creates energy to help people attain goals.

The next Macrobiotic Healing for Women class will be on December 15 at Seed Kitchen.

Food, Energy and Health

By Alan Kenney
Guest blog

A recent experience gave me an object lesson on food as energy and the power it has to affect our bodies and emotions.

Sanae Suzuki at Studio Mugen
Sanae Suzuki is my macrobiotic counselor and heading into autumn I found that my energy and my body had become quite contracted, that is very tight.  I experienced physical stiffness in my body, had a hard time relaxing and sleeping and behaviorally I became quite pushy, irritable and not able to sleep.  My wife even commented on my rigid behaviors and started to be concerned.

I realized how the energy of food affects me both physically and behaviorally, and that it can impact my mind and emotions.

In weekly counseling Sanae and I had always discussed my diet and recipes and other aspects of my macrobiotic lifestyle.  However, recently we decided to look at how I was cooking.  What we discovered is that I had been cooking brown rice and beans by pressure cooking pots and steaming my vegetables instead of water sautéed and/or boiling for a long time and all through the summer.

We determined that this meant that I was creating a lot of contracted energy in my body through this cooking style. Sanae taught me that macrobiotics is not just what kind of ingredients we use for our cooking and eating. It is also about how to cook and what kind of equipment you use for your own condition. Learning about our energy is to learn about food and style of cooking, equipment that we use and adapting as seasons change, our physical and mental condition changes, and more.

Next we determined what to change in my cooking style, my recipes and determined what macrobiotic remedy to use to help get my body back in balance.

After several days of my adjusted program I have noticed welcome changes to my body and energy and have become more relaxed and easy going…and have returned to a relaxed sleep pattern.

Alan Kenney
I am thankful that my path has led me to studying macrobiotics and learning about the energy of food and how it can affect us physically and behaviorally.  This incident showed me how important it is to understand the energy of food to maintain the best health.  A greater lesson to me is the value of having a counselor/advisor who can help me understand this path I am on.

I encourage anyone who is seeking to improve their health physically, mentally or to strengthen the spirit to take an active interest in learning how food as energy can affect your life. Also consider a counselor to ensure that you don’t walk that path by yourself.
